Medicare is federal health for people 65 and over and people with disabilities. The free parts provide hospital and medical coverage. You can also pay a monthly premium for additional options to supplement your basic coverage. 

If you know someone over the age of 65, there’s a good chance they’re enrolled in Medicare. However, one of the most common Medicare myths is that only senior citizens can make use of Medicare. In actuality, there’s a much wider range of eligibility other than age. 

One of the myths is that Medicare is only available for people 65 or older. The fact is, Medicare is available for those age 65 and older, as well as younger people with disabilities. Medicare qualifications also include people with end-stage renal disease. 

You can get free coverage if you are retired and are receiving Social Security benefits or are eligible to receive benefits. It may also become available through government employment. 

Even if you get Part A for free, Part B always requires a premium. That monthly premium comes from your Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Civil Service Retirement check if you have one. 

The process for applying for Medicare with a disability could take months to complete. Anyone that reaches their 65th birthday automatically becomes eligible. 

Once you know that you qualify for Medicare, you can apply. The application process verifies that you are eligible for coverage and helps determine if you need to pay premiums. 

U.S. citizens may apply over the phone, online, or in-person. They must have certain documents including their birth certificate, proof of citizenship, and Social Security card. 

Current health insurance information is necessary if Medicare will be used with pre-existing coverage, as well as tax information and any available military documents. Individuals applying with a disability, may need a special examination. 

Who is eligible for Medicare? As it turns out, all U.S. citizens can potentially get Medicare coverage as long as they qualify. 

You must have been a permanent legal resident of the U.S. for at least five years. If you haven’t reached the age of 65, you can qualify through your disability.
