MEDICARE BASICS

Understanding the parts of Medicare

Medicare has four key parts, each covering different healthcare needs. Knowing how they work together helps you choose the right coverage for your needs.

PART A

Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, nursing facilities, hospice, and certain forms of home health care. While there is a deductible associated with Part A, in many instances, it becomes premium-free if you or your spouse have paid taxes.

PART B

Medical Insurance

Medicare Part B provides medical insurance for outpatient care and preventive services. It encompasses essential services required for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of specific conditions.

PART C

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C, commonly referred to as Medicare Advantage, enables approved private companies to deliver Medicare benefits. This all-in-one plan includes Parts A and B, often Part D, plus extras like vision and dental.

PART D

Prescription Drugs

Medicare Part D is a coverage plan that helps lower prescription costs for both generic and brand-name medications, helping to ease the burden of high drug prices.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Medicare questions, answered

We understand that Medicare can be overwhelming. Browse our FAQs for quick answers to the most common questions.

If I’m working past 65, do I need to enroll in Medicare?

If you’re still working at 65 and have employer health insurance, you may be able to delay Medicare, especially if your employer has 20 or more employees. However, if the company has fewer than 20, Medicare usually becomes your primary coverage, so enrolling is important. Many people sign up for Medicare Part A since it’s free if you’ve worked at least 10 years. To avoid penalties or gaps later, check your employer’s coverage and consider speaking with a Medicare agent.

Am I automatically enrolled in Medicare when I turn 65?

You’re only automatically enrolled if you’ve been receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits for at least 4 months before your 65th birthday. If not, you’ll need to sign up yourself during your Initial Enrollment Period to avoid late penalties.

Can I keep my doctor on Medicare?

It depends on the plan you choose. We’ll help you find a plan that includes your preferred doctors and specialists.

How do I enroll in Medicare?

If you’re not automatically enrolled, you can sign up during one of three periods:
