SPECIALIZED PROTECTION

Coverage designed for premium vessels

Owning a mega yacht or luxury vessel creates an exposure profile unlike any other private asset. Sophisticated onboard systems, extended cruising ranges, professional crew arrangements, and high-value tenders each introduce distinct risks that require a coverage program built from the ground up — not adapted from a standard marine policy.

Hull & Physical Damage

Mega yacht hull insurance should reflect the full value of your vessel, without depreciation. Agreed value coverage protects the hull, deck, machinery, propulsion systems, and electronics, helping secure replacement cost settlement on a new-for-old basis when it matters most.

Liability protection (P&I)

Yacht liability insurance through a P&I policy addresses legal obligations to third parties for bodily injury, property damage, and loss of life. For mega yacht owners, adequate protection and indemnity limits are a critical, non-negotiable component of any sound coverage program.

Tenders, toys, and water sports equipment

Yacht tender insurance and coverage for personal watercraft, rigid inflatable boats, and water toys should be explicitly structured, not assumed. A comprehensive mega yacht program addresses physical damage and liability for each asset, including protection during transport and storage.

Crew liability

The Jones Act creates significant legal obligations for mega yacht owners with paid crew. Injured crew members can pursue claims for negligence, unseaworthiness, and maintenance and cure. Gaps in crew liability coverage can result in substantial uninsured exposure under maritime law.

Extended navigation territory

International yacht insurance should reflect where you actually sail, not default geographic restrictions. Worldwide navigation coverage for Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Pacific passages requires explicit confirmation at policy inception before departure, not after a loss occurs.

Search, rescue, and emergency assistance

Open and international waters create scenarios where rapid response is essential. Marine emergency assistance coverage ensures that search and rescue reimbursement and emergency towing costs do not compound an already critical situation, wherever your vessel takes you.

Frequently asked questions

From coverage details to claims support, we’ve got the answers you need to keep moving forward.

What is a mega yacht, and what qualifies as a luxury marine vessel?
Mega yachts are generally defined as vessels exceeding 24 meters (approximately 79 feet) in length. Luxury marine vessels is a broader term encompassing high-value watercraft of varying sizes — including large motor yachts, sailing yachts, and performance vessels — that carry a level of complexity, value, and onboard sophistication that standard boat policies are not designed to address. Vessel value, onboard systems, crew arrangements, navigation range, and overall risk profile all determine whether a specialized marine insurance program is appropriate.
What is agreed value coverage, and why does it matter for yacht owners?
Agreed value coverage establishes the vessel’s insured value at policy inception. In the event of a covered total loss, the policy pays the agreed amount with no depreciation applied. The alternative, actual cash value (ACV) coverage, factors in depreciation at the time of a claim. For high-value yachts, the gap between agreed value and ACV at the time of a total loss can be substantial. Agreed value coverage eliminates that uncertainty and is the recommended approach for mega yacht and luxury marine owners.
Do I need separate insurance for my crew?
For mega yacht owners with paid crew, crew liability coverage is essential. The Jones Act, a federal maritime law, provides significant legal protection to maritime workers and creates substantial legal obligations for vessel owners. Injured crew members can pursue claims for negligence, unseaworthiness, and maintenance and cure. An uncovered crew liability claim under maritime law can result in significant financial exposure. A properly structured mega yacht program addresses Jones Act crew liability explicitly.
How is mega yacht insurance different from standard boat insurance?
Standard boat policies are designed for recreational vessels of modest size and value. Mega yacht insurance accounts for the significantly broader exposure profile of large, complex vessels, including agreed value hull protection, professional crew liability under the Jones Act, extended international navigation, sophisticated onboard electronics, tenders and water toys, and potential charter use. The underwriting process, coverage structure, and insurance markets are fundamentally different.
Does my yacht insurance cover international navigation?
Coverage depends on the navigating territory defined in the policy. Many standard policies include geographic restrictions. Operating outside those limits can reduce or void coverage. Mega yacht owners who cruise the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Pacific, or other international waters should confirm that the policy’s navigating territory reflects actual plans. Extended cruising areas can typically be added but must be confirmed at policy inception before departure, not after a loss occurs.
Can I insure my yacht if I plan to charter it?
Standard yacht policies generally exclude charter use. Owners who plan to make their vessel available to charterers need a specific charter endorsement or charter liability coverage in place before doing so. Failing to disclose charter activity can result in coverage being denied at the time of a claim. Discuss charter plans with a Baldwin Group Private Client marine advisor before putting the vessel into charter service.
